Springfield 74, Babson 62

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — SPRINGFIELD, Mass., Feb. 7, 2004 – Springfield College sophomore guard Derek Yvon poured in 31 points and freshman forward Damian Farley added a season-high 13 points off the bench as the Pride defeated Babson, 74-62, in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic (NEWMAC) men’s basketball game this afternoon in Blake Arena.

Yvon, who was 5-of-8 from three-point range and 10-of-11 from the free-throw line, eclipsed the 30-point mark for the third time this season for the Pride. Farley hit all five of his field goal attempts and grabbed four rebounds in 20 minutes. SC, which snapped a four-game losing streak to the Beavers, improved to 6-14 overall and 2-5 in the NEWMAC.

Babson, which fell to 12-7 overall and 5-3 in conference play, was led by junior guard Phil Riffe, who had 14 points off the bench, and junior guard Jeff Nicholson, who scored 12 points.
Babson held a 53-50 lead with 8:24 to play after a basket by sophomore forward Brian Parsons. SC junior forward Jason O’Tash drilled a three-pointer to tie the score at 53-53 with 7:31 to play, and junior guard Matt Zerneri drove in for a lay-up to give the Pride the lead for good at 55-53 with 7:09 remaining. Yvon drilled a three-pointer with 6:09 left to extend the lead to 58-53.

The Beavers closed to within two at 62-60 on a pair of free throws by junior forward Brooks Brown at 4:32, but SC responded with a 6-0 run to push the lead to eight at 68-60 with 1:38 left. Yvon hit six consecutive free throws over the final 1:04.
