Johns Hopkins 96, Washington College 79

BALTIMORE, Md. — Johns Hopkins improved to 13-6 overall and 9-4 in the Centennial Conference with a 96-79 win over visiting Washington College this afternoon at Goldfarb Gymnasium. The Blue Jays shot 53% from the field in the game, including a 59% performance in the second half, and outrebounded the Shoremen, 45-30, in the win.

Hopkins never trailed during the first half and took a 42-33 lead into the intermission. The Shoremen (8-12, 5-8 Centennial) opened the second half a 20-10 spurt and took their only lead of the game on a three-pointer by senior forward David Horvath that gave WC a 53-52 lead with 15:12 remaining in the game. Hopkins regained the lead for good on the next possession on a lay-up by Danny Nawrocki with 14:47 to go.

The Shoremen were still within five points with 7:49 on the clock, trailing 69-64, but the Blue Jays went on a 13-0 run, capped off by lay-up and free throw by Nawrocki, to take a commanding 82-64 lead with 3:15 remaining.

Eric Toback led the Blue Jays with game highs of 27 points, 13 rebounds, and two blocked shots. Matt Righter, who was four-of-six from beyond the three-point line and 10-of-12 from the free throw line, added 26 points and a game-high five assists. Nawrocki finished with 14 points and eight rebounds, while Kevin Marquez also scored 14 points.

Sophomore guard Kyle Stem paced the Shoremen with team highs of 22 points and six rebounds. Sophomore forward Jonathan Webb scored 17 points and dished out a game-high five assists. Sophomore guard Dustin Abbate added 14 points, while junior guard Andrew Gentile finished with 12.

The game was part of the Blue Jays' Alumni Day festivities. Toback and Stem received Wall-O'Mahony Awards as their respective teams' Most Valuable Players in the game. The award is named after two Johns Hopkins alumni who perished in the terrorist attacks of September 11th, 2001.
