Illinois Wesleyan 80, Carthage 68

Bloomington, Ill. — The Carthage College men’s basketball team (13-7, 5-4 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) lost to CCIW-opponent Illinois Wesleyan University (13-6, 6-2 CCIW), 80-68, on Saturday, February 7 at the Shirk Center in Bloomington, Ill. Carthage led by as much as six points in the first half, 24-18, at 5:45 after using an 11-0 run to erase an 18-13 Titan lead at 10:07. Carthage led by five, 26-21, at 4:58, before Illinois Wesleyan used an 13-4 run to close out the first period with a 34-30 lead. The Redmen got back to within two, 34-32, at the start of the second period before the Titans opened up an eight-point bulge, 42-34, at 17:51. After trailing by five, 48-43, at 14:40, Carthage fell behind by 11, 54-43, at 13:40. The Redmen got as close as seven, 58-51, at 9:59 before IWU went up by 14, 68-54, at 5:10. The Titans held on from there to win by 12, 80-68. IWU shot 49 percent (31-63), while Carthage shot 50 percent (26-52). Theo Powell scored a career-high 31 points, including 19 second-half points. Powell was 12-of-15 from the floor and pulled down six rebounds. Kevin Menard had 16 points, but no other Carthage player scored in double figures. Five Titans scored in double figures, with Jim Lehan leading the way with 17 points and six assists. Cory Jones and Adam Dauksas each had 16 points, Zach Freeman had 12, and Keelan Amelianovich chipped in 10 points. Carthage is off for a week before traveling to Rock Island, Ill., on Saturday, February 14 to take on conference-opponent Augustana College (Ill.) in a 7:30 p.m. contest at the Carver Physical Education Center.
