The victory, coupled by North Carolina Wesleyan’s 55-53 victory over Shenandoah, puts the Monarchs in sole possession of first place in the USA South Athletic Conference. Methodist improves to 11-8 overall and 7-2 in the USA South.
Some hot shooting enabled Methodist to take control in the first half. The Monarchs shot an impressive 58 percent from the field in the opening half, including 63 percent from 3-point range.
Ferrum used a 10-2 run to trim the Methodist lead to 22-19 with 8:43 remaining. After that, however, it was all Monarchs. Methodist answered with a 13-2 run as Eddie Lamar and Sam Porter each scored twice in the rally. That was followed by a 10-0 run spearhead by five points by Dragon Radmanovic to give the Monarchs a 45-23 lead with 59 seconds remaining.
The Monarchs led by as much as 34 points in the second half as they limited Ferrum to 22 percent shooting from the field. Consecutive 3-point baskets by Lamar and Arthur Hatch gave Methodist a 55-28 at the 14:55 mark. Jordan Snipes, Radmanovic and Eugene Grant each followed with 3-point baskets, giving the Monarchs a 71-37 lead with 8:23 remaining.
Lamar paced Methodist with 15 points, while Seth Thomas and Radmanovic each scored 13 points and Grant scored 12 points and dished out nine assists. Porter added nine points and seven rebounds. As a team, Methodist shot 56 percent (10-for-18) from 3-point range.
For Ferrum (8-12, 2-7), Kevin Aigbe scored 18 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.
Methodist hits the road again on Wednesday for a 7:30 p.m. contest at Averett.
