The Cobbers shot 58.8% (10-for-17) from 3-point range, and led for the entire second half, to pick up their 15th win of the season. The 78 points scored by Concordia is the most allowed by the Knights the entire season.
The Cobbers have now won 10 of their last 12 games, and are now 12-5 in the MIAC, one game ahead of Bethel for third place. The victory pushes Concordia's overall record to 15-6, the most since the 2000-01 when they also finished with 15 wins. Carleton drops to fifth place in the league with a mark of 10-6. They fall for the fourth time in the last seven games and slide to 13-8 overall.
Josh Downey had the hot hand for the Cobbers. The outside-shooting specialist finished with a game-high 23 points in 28 minutes of action. He was a perfect 5-for-5 from behind the 3-point arc and 7-for-10 overall from the floor. Soren Nelson gave the Cobbers an early scoring presence and finished with 20 points. As a team, Concordia shot 56.5%
(26-for-46) from the floor and 84.2% (16-for-19) from the free throw line. In the last five games, the Cobbers have shot 88.4% (100-for-113) from the foul line, and have sank more free throws than their opponents have attempted.
Carleton was led by Tanner Schiek, who scored 15 points, collected 10 rebounds and came away with his 22nd double-double of his career. Anthony Baquero added 13 points and Kyle Beste chipped in 12.
The pivotal stretch of the game came midway through the first half when Concordia went on a 16-4 run to claim a 33-18 lead. The Cobbers were never threatened from that point on, and took a 38-29 lead into the break.
In the second half, Concordia pushed the lead to 17 points in the first five minutes of the period. Carleton tried to whittle into the margin by making a run late in the game. The Knights trimmed the lead to 11 points at 68-57 with 4:00 to play, but a clutch 3-point basket by Keith
Eckhoff pushed the lead to 14 points and gave the Cobbers back the momentum.
Concordia shot 60.% (12-for-20) in the final 20 minutes of the game, including 6-for-7 (85.7%) from 3-point range. They also made all 10 free throw attempts in the second half.
Two other players joined Downey and Nelson in double figures for the Cobbers. Jason Miller, the league's leader in field goal percentage, was 4-of-5 from the field and finished with 12 points. Eckhoff was perfect from the floor (3-for-3) and ended the game with 11 points. Chris Wermerson pulled down a team-high eight rebounds.
The Cobbers will finish their seven-day, four-game odyssey by playing at St. Mary's on Monday, February 9 at 7:30pm. After that, Concordia will finish the regular season by playing two home games. Duane Siverson's crew will host Hamline on Saturday, February 14 at 3:00pm and then
finish the MIAC regular season with a game against Augsburg on Wednesday, February 18 at 7:30pm. The St. Mary's and Augsburg games can be heard live on KVOX 1280AM in the Fargo-Moorhead area and worldwide over the internet at www.gocobbers.com. Due to a scheduling conflict with the women's team, the game against Hamline will not be aired over KVOX but will be carried on the internet.
