Worcester, MA — The Clark University men’s basketball team defeated Wheaton College 91-77 in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) contest. The Cougars built a 21-point halftime lead on 51.5 percent shooting (17-for-33) including 6-for-14 from long range. Senior Dave McNamara (Worcester, MA/Worcester Academy) led the Cougars with 12 first half points. Clark pushed the lead to as many as 26 points with 12:42 remaining in the game but Wheaton answered with a 29-12 run to cut the lead to nine with 5:27 left in the game. A three-pointer by Clark’s senior Trevor Walker (Milford, MA/Milford) gave the Cougars a 13-point lead with less than three minutes to go. However, the Lyons wouldn’t go away and senior Scott Mahan (Bridgewater, MA/Cardinal Spellman) hit a three to pull Wheaton within nine with 1:47 to play but that was as close as the Lyons would get. The Cougars, who never trailed in the game, made six straight free-throws in the final two minutes to push the lead back to 15 points and secure the Cougars 12th win of the season. McNamara ended the game with a team-high 22 points and first-year Asher Cowan (Petersborough, NH/Cushing Academy) had a career-high 14 points including 4-of-4 from behind the arc. Junior Joesan Vega (Pawtucket, RI/St. Raphael’s) had a game-high 27 points including 4-of-9 from long range for Wheaton and Mahan added 16 points and eight rebounds. Wheaton, who fell to 13-7 overall and 4-4 in the NEWMAC, shot 41.9 percent overall from the floor and 41.2 percent from long range (7-for-17). Clark’s seniors Brent Kenneway (Sturbridge, MA/Tantasqua Regional) and James Collins (Worcester, MA/Holy Name) each chipped in 10 points. Kenneway had five rebounds while Collins added six rebounds and three assists. Walker ended the game with nine points and seven rebounds for Clark, who improved to 12-7 overall and 7-1 in the conference.
