Christopher Newport 67, Chowan 56

NEWPORT NEWS, VA — MEN’S BASKETBALL ENDS THREE-GAME SLIDE WITH 67-56 WIN OVER CHOWAN

NEWPORT NEWS, VA – CNU’s men’s basketball team defeated Chowan 67-56 to end the first three-game losing streak since 1991-92.
The Captains got on top early taking a 30-24 lead into the locker room at halftime. Neither team shot extremely well from the floor. CNU was 12-of-33 (36%) from the field, 4-of-15 (27%) on three-point attempts and 2-of-5 (40%) from the free throw line. Chowan wasn’t much better as they finished the half 9-of-28 (32%) from the floor, 0-of-5 on three’s and 6-of-9 (67%) from the free throw line.
The second half saw both teams shot a little better. Chowan was 10-of-25 (40%) from the floor, 2-of-5 (40%) on three’s and 10-of-13 (77%) from the charity stripe. The Captains finished the second half 12-of-31 (39%) from the floor, 0-of-11 on three’s and 13-of-15 (87%) from the free throw line.
For the game, the Braves finished 19-of-53 (36%) from the floor, 2-of-10 (20%) on three’s and 16-of-22 (73%) from the free throw line. CNU finished the game 24-of-64 (38%) from the field, 4-of-26 (15%) on three’s but finished the contest 15-of-20 (75%) from the charity stripe.
The Captains hit their free throws down the stretch and forced 25 Chowan turnovers for the game.
The Braves were led by Trayvon Lathan with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Wayne Hambrick fouled out with 11 points.
For CNU, Blake Brookman led the way with 16 points. Korey Lewis added a career high 10 points off the bench. Mark Hepner finished one point short of another double-double. He added nine points and tied a career high with 13 rebounds.
Chowan is now 9-9 overall and 4-4 in the USA South. The Captains are now 11-9 overall and 5-4 in the USA South.
CNU returns to action this Wednesday as they travel to NC Wesleyan with tip-off set for 7:30 pm.
