Cedar Rapids, IA — Coe knocks off No.-6 Buena Vista

Coe connected on 13 three-point field goals en route to an 86-71 upset victory over No.-6 Buena Vista Friday night at Eby Fieldhouse. Coe forward Brandon Sain was 5-for-5 from behind the arc in the second half and had a game-high 25 points. Scott Weber’s 18 points and game-high nine rebounds led the Beavers.

The win ends an 11-game winning streak for Buena Vista. Coe has won five straight.

The Kohawks (11-9, 7-4 IIAC) erased a 39-32 halftime deficit by shooting 68 percent (17-of-25) in the second half including 9-of-12 three-pointers. Buena Vista (17-2, 10-1) was limited to 10-of-26 shooting in the second half.

Four Kohawks finished in double-figures. Jake Fish, the team’s leading scorer had 18 points and six rebounds. Luke Niemann and Nick Wilkins added 13 and 12 points respectively.

A four-point play by Buena Vista guard Eric Wiebers gave the Beavers a 52-42 lead with 15 minutes left in the second half. Wiebers finished with 15 points.

Back-to-back three-pointers by Sain and Jeramy Hopkins sparked a 10-0 run to tie the game.

Two more three-pointers by Sain pushed Coe’s lead to 64-57, and his fifth three-pointer of the game gave Coe a 74-61 advantage with under five minutes to play.

Coe, the fifth-best free throw shooting team in the nation, made 19-of-20 for the game and eight over the final two minutes to seal the victory.

Coe and Buena Vista split the season series with both teams successfully defending their home court. Buena Vista won 68-63 in Storm Lake on Jan. 10.
