Saint Vincent 80, Washington and Jefferson 53

WASHINGTON, Pa. — Junior point guard Kenny Roberts (Falling Waters, W.Va./Hedgesville) scored 15 points, including the 1,000th of his career, to lead St. Vincent past Washington & Jefferson, 80-53, in men’s basketball action on Wednesday evening at the Henry Memorial Center.

The Bearcats (18-3), ranked No. 26 in NAIA Division II, busted out to a 13-3 lead in the first 4:24 as junior forward Felix Indaye (Cergy, France/Galilee) knocked down three-straight three-pointers.

SVC increased its lead to 25-12 at the 8:36 mark after a triple by freshman guard Ian McCollough (Springdale, Md./C.H. Flowers), but the Presidents sliced the lead to 26-21 just four minutes later on a trey by freshman forward Matt Vorndran (Fort Wayne, Ind./Carroll).

The Bearcats regrouped and ended the half on a 10-4 run to take a 36-25 lead into the locker room. McCollough made all five of his shots from the field in the half for 13 points.

Freshman guard Brandon Studer (Johnstown, Pa./Conemaugh Valley) opened the second half with a three-pointer for W&J to cut the SVC lead to 36-28; however, St. Vincent rattled off 17 of the next 24 points to assume a 56-38 lead. Roberts scored seven points during the stretch for the Bearcats and W&J would not get closer than 21 points the rest of the way.

Studer scored a game-high 16 points on 5-of-13 shooting for the Presidents (7-13), while freshman guard Jon Koch (New Kensington, Pa./Plum) added 13. Freshman guard Anthony Hairston (Roanoke, Va./Roanoke Catholic) also dished out a career-high eight assists. W&J was held to 27 percent (18-for-66) shooting and was out-rebounded by a 54-35 margin.

Roberts added five assists and three steals for St. Vincent, while McCollough finished with 14 points and six boards. SVC shot 46 percent (31-for-68) from the field and canned 11 triples.

The Presidents begin the second half of their conference schedule on Saturday by traveling to Waynesburg for a 7:30 pm tip-off.
