Concordia-Moorhead senior guard Joe Bueckers sank 6-of-6 free throws in the final 19 seconds and the visiting Cobbers shot 55% from the field in Wednesday's 64-61 victory over St. Thomas in MIAC men's basketball play at UST's Schoenecker Arena.
Bueckers has now made 59-of-63 (93.7%) free throws on the season.
Josh Downey had 16 points and Soren Nelson added 13 points and seven rebounds for the Cobbers (14-6 overall, 11-5 MIAC), who swept the season series vs. the Tommies by a combined seven points. St. Thomas had swept the regular-season series the previous four seasons.
Senior center Nick Schader had 22 points and 11 rebounds and Neal Anderson added 17 points and four assists for the Tommies (9-11, 7-9), who had a four-game winning streak snapped.
St. Thomas remained in sixth place by one game with fouyr to go as St. John's lost 71-59 at St. Olaf.
The Cobbers used a 10-0 run to build a 28-23 lead and led 28-26 at halftime. Downey sank two 3-pointers to fuel a 12-2 run in the first 5:00 of the second half that built a 40-28 lead.
St. Thomas pulled within 56-53 with 3:00 left on Joey Shimek's basket. Schader's 3-pointer with 31 seconds to play made it 58-56, but Bueckers converted three times late to ice the win.
St. Thomas hosts Gustavus Saturday (1 p.m.).
