Carthage 81, North Park 72

Chicago, Ill. — The Carthage College men’s basketball team (13-6, 5-3 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) defeated CCIW-opponent North Park University (6-13, 1-7 CCIW), 81-72, on Wednesday, February 4 at the North Park Gym in Chicago, Ill Carthage saw an early lead slip away, as the Vikings went up, 11-10, five minutes into the game and kept the lead the rest of the first half. North Park bumped its lead to nine points at the break, 36-27. The Vikings made it a 12-point game, 43-31, at 17:28, before Carthage used a 14-2 run to tie the game at 45-45 at 14:37 on three-pointer by Mark Morrison. From there, the lead went back and forth for the next 13 minutes. North Park led by as much as four, 51-47, at 12:45. North Park’s last lead was 70-69 at 3:00 on a three-pointer by Javier Sanchez, and the game was tied at 72-72 at 1:52 on a pair of free throws by Mike Haehn. Carthage took the lead for good, 75-72, on a three-pointer by Morrison, his eighth of the game and his seventh in the second half. Morrison’s eight treys tied a Carthage game record set Jake Olson versus Aurora University on Jan. 7, 1998. Morrison wound with a career-high 28 points on nine-of-12 field goals, including eight-of-10 from three-point range. Five of Morrison’s seven second-half treys brought the Redmen back from either a deficit or a tie game. Theo Powell had 21 points and five rebounds. Scott Hood had 12 points and six assists, and Trevor Cockayne added 10 points. Carthage shot 52 percent (29-56), including a sizzling 62 percent (18-29) in the second half. The Vikings shot 49 percent (27-55), including 53 percent in the first half (16-30). Carthage travels to Bloomington, Ill., on Saturday, February 7 to take on conference-opponent Illinois Wesleyan University in a 7:30 p.m. contest at the Shirk Center.
