Anthony Baquero added 12 points, canning all three of his three-point attempts, and grabbed six rebounds for Carleton (13-7, 10-5 MIAC), which moved within one game of clinching a spot in the six-team MIAC Playoffs.
Terrence Smith was the lone player in double figures for St. Mary's (5-15, 4-11 MIAC) with 12 points. The Cardinals shot only 33 percent from the floor.
It looked like Carleton would blow the game open early as the Knights raced to a 15-2 lead, capped by Micah Johnson's three-pointer. The Cardinals still trailed 24-8 with 7:38 left in the half, but closed the stanza on an 8-1 spurt to trail 37-27 at the half.
The Cardinals carried that momentum into the second half, scoring three quick field goals to get within five at 38-33. Jake Phillips canned a triple, Schieck and Forkrud scored inside and Forkrud splashed home a three, putting Carleton back out by 13, 48-35.
The pesky Cardinals wouldn't die, however, trailing by only 11 points with 6:49 left. Forkrud again had the answer, converting two free throws after getting an offensive rebound, then feeding Schieck inside for two. He canned a hook shot with 3:55 left, giving Carleton a comfortable 65-48 lead.
The Cardinals held a slight 35-34 edge on the glass and grabbed 17 offensive rebounds, but second-chance points were even at 9-9 as the Cardinals failed to convert on a number of point-blank chances. Carleton also held a sizable 21-6 edge in free-throws points, going 21-for-30 from the free-throw line.
Carleton makes its longest conference road trip of the season, travelling to Moorhead, Minn., to face Concordia College on Saturday, Feb. 7 at 3 p.m. The game can be heard live on KYMN 1080 AM. The Cardinals travel to second-place Macalester College for a 3 p.m. contest.
