IN WOMEN’S BASKETBALL VICTORY
Junior guard Jessica Baker (Middlebury, Conn.) scored a career-high 26, sinking 10 out of 16 shots from the field and four out of five from three-point range, and added three steals to lead the Trinity College Bantams to a 78-57 win over the visiting Western Connecticut State University Colonials in women’s basketball action this afternoon at Oosting Gymnasium. Trinity improves to 9-9 and stops a four-game losing streak, while the Colonials drop 7-13 with their third consecutive loss.
The Bantams opened the game with a 22-6 run and never looked back, shooting 59.3 percent from the field as a team and 62.1 percent in the opening half. Trinity made eight out of 11 shots from beyond the arc in the first half, including three by freshman forward Leigh Melanson (Woburn, Mass.) in as many attempts. Baker led Trinity with 18 points, as the Bantams led, 44-27, at the break. Trinity led by as many as 24 points in the second half and never allowed its advantage to drop below 17 points.
Melanson finished with 19 points, five assists, and a pair of blocked shots, while junior co-captain center Rebecca Bell (Colorado Springs, Colo.) totaled 16 points and a game-high 12 boards. Melanson (8-9) and Bell (8-10) combined to shoot 84.2 percent from the floor. Bantam sophomore guard Kerri Stumpo (Walpole, Mass.) contributed four rebounds and a career-high eight assists off the bench. Senior Christin Morgatto (Seymour, Conn.) paced the Colonials with 13 points, 11 rebounds, and five assists.
