SCRANTON, Pa.—Freshman guard Allison Matt (Allentown, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic) came off the bench to score a game-high 15 points, pulled down seven rebounds and handed out three assists in 20 minutes of action to lead The University of Scranton to a 87-49 victory over cross-town rival Marywood University at the John J. Long, S.J., Center Monday evening.
The Lady Royals, ranked 5th in the latest national poll by D3hoops.com, also received 11 points and four assists from senior guard Katie Dougherty (Philadelphia, Pa./Nazareth Academy) and 10 points from junior forward Maura Kane (Wenonah, N.J./Gateway) to win their fourth straight game to improve to 18-1. Senior forward Natasha Pashcuk (Nicholson, Pa./Mt. View) and junior guard Kaleena Calpin (Scranton, Pa./Scranton) led the Pacers, now 6-9, with eight points apiece and senior center Kate Puschak (Lancaster, Pa./Conestoga Valley) pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds.
Scranton broke away from an early 5-5 tie by going on a 19-2 run to take command early in the first half, 24-7, before setting for a 47-24 lead by intermission. Matt scored 11 first-half points and Dougherty nine as the Royals connected on 19 of 39 field goal attempts (48.7 percent) and pressured the Pacers into 17 turnovers.
The Lady Royals maintained a comfortable lead throughout the second half. Scranton, which plays Freedom Conference rival Lycoming this Wednesday, February 4, at the Lamade Gymnasium in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, beginning at 6:00 p.m., has now scored 80-or-more points in each of its last four games.
The win was career victory number 570 for 24th-year head coach Mike Strong. Dougherty, who scored her 1000th career point in last Wednesday in a 93-59 victory over Delaware Valley, moved ahead of Mary Leedy (1020, 1981-1985) for 19th-place on the Lady Royals’ all-time scoring list. Dougherty now has 1025 career points.
