The 17th ranked Bulldogs (15-3 overall) took a 10-point lead at halftime as senior Jim Zinn scored 11 first-half points. The lead swelled to as many as 14 points at the 13:26 mark of the second half and DSU continued to lead by 11 points, 64-53, with 6:25 remaining when Muhlenberg (6-12 overall) made a run. The Mules went on a 7-2 run over the next two minutes to cut the lead to just six points, 64-58, with 4:24 left to play.
After the two teams traded baskets over the next 3 ½ minutes and DeSales still leading by six, Mike Goin knocked down his third three-pointer of the half to cut the Bulldog margin to just three points at 71-68 with 21 seconds left. Senior Jeff Clifford knocked down 1-of-2 free throws to push the lead back to four points and the Mules missed its last opportunity providing the final score.
Zinn led the DeSales attack with a team-high 18 points on 6-of-10 shooting. Juniors Kyle Koch and Michael Venafra each added 10 points and fellow juniors David Bright each scored nine points and grabbed nine rebounds in the win.
Jeff Stewart and his game-high 30 points and 10 rebounds led Muhlenberg. Chris Pothering added 11 points as the Mules shot 46.6 percent for the game as compared to DeSales 39.7 percent shooting. DSU controlled the boards out-rebounding MC, 42-29.
