Hampden-Sydney 87, Bridgewater (Va.) 84

BRIDGEWATER, Va — The eighth-ranked Hampden-Sydney Tigers erased a 12-point deficit in the final 5:30 to force overtime and then went on to defeat the Bridgewater College Eagles, 87-84 in ODAC action Monday night.

The Eagles used a 14-6 run in the second half to lead by 12 points. Freshman Josh Maupin had six points during the run and Ricky Easterling capped the flurry with a 3-pointer to give Bridgewater a 71-59 lead with 5:43 remaining.

The Tigers rallied behind the 3-point shooting of All-American Jeff Monroe and Brian Gunn. Gunn hit back-to-back threes to trim the margin to six before a Layup by Clay Michael pushed the margin to eight. Monroe hit another three before the Tigers’ David Willson and Bridgewater’s Jeff Schwalm traded hoops, making the score 75-70. After a Nick Stewart free throw pushed the BC lead to six, Monroe hit a 3-pointer to trim the margin to three, 76-73 with 1:46 left.

Schwalm hit a jumper to make it a five-point lead, but Willson answered with 45 seconds left to trim the lead to three.

After a BC turnover, Monroe drilled a 3-pointer with 15 seconds left to tie the score at 78-78 and send the game into overtime.

The Tigers jumped out to an 84-80 lead in OT but a jumper by Schwalm and a driving layup by Ashby Tarkington tied the score at 84-84 with 46 second left.

Monroe scored on a short jumper with 12 seconds left and the Eagles turned the ball over with six seconds to go. Monroe made the first of two free throws with four seconds left, but missed the second. Nick Stewart rebounded for the Eagles and dribbled to halfcourt where his shot at the buzzer was just short.

Monroe scored 26 points, 22 after intermission to lead the Tigers. Gunn added 16 and Jason Holman scored 13.

Schwalm led the Eagles with 22 points and 10 rebounds. Easterling scored 16 points and Tarkington 10.

The Tigers improved to 17-2 overall and 10-2 in the ODAC while the Eagles dropped to 12-7 overall and 6-6 in the conference.
