PURCHASE, N.Y. — Despite a gritty 20-point, 22-rebound effort by senior John Danielski (Ansonia, Conn.), the Manhattanville Valiants fell at the buzzer to the Yeshiva Maccabees 60-59. Senior Farid Johnson (Yonkers, N.Y.) added 15 points and seven rebounds, while sophomore Mike Benziger (Sonoma, Calif.) shot 4-of-9 from beyond the arc en route to 14 points for the Valiants. The loss snaps Manhattanville’s nine-game win streak and 10-game win streak at home. The Valiants drop to 14-5 overall, 8-1 in the Skyline Conference.
Yeshiva’s Ian Ribald (Dallas, Texas) hit a three-point shot with 1.5 seconds remaining to give the Maccabees (6-10 overall, 3-6 Skyline Conference) the win. Junior Josh Gottlieb (Edison, N.J.) paced Yeshiva with 12 points, while senior Jack Yulzary (Ramla, Israel) added 10 points and seven rebounds.
Both teams battled and did not earn a lead greater than four points in the entire game. In the first half, Manhattanville led 26-25 despite shooting 36 percent from the floor. Johnson tallied 11 of his 15 points in the first session, shooting 4-of-6 from the floor.
With two minutes remaining, Manhattanville’s John DiBetta (Valhalla, N.Y.) hit a three to give the Valiants a 57-53 lead. Yeshiva came right back with a Gottlieb jumper to cut the deficit to two.
Fouling at every moment, Yeshiva fouled Manhattanville’s Johnson, Benziger and junior forward Kevin O’Rourke (Yonkers, N.Y.) in the bonus situation. However, the Valiants could not convert on their foul shots, shooting 2-of 6 from the charity stripe in the late stages.
After a lay-up by Yulzary, Yeshiva got the ball back on a jump ball rebound off a Johnson free throw miss and set up their offense. With a shot from the left corner, Ribald converted on his third consecutive three-point shot.
The Valiants had a clear edge on the glass, corralling 35 rebounds to 28 by the Maccabees. However, Yeshiva outshot Manhattanville 46 to 40 percent from the floor, including going 7-for-11 from three-point range.
Manhattanville sophomore guard Dan DiMartino (Massapequa, N.Y.) had five steals and four points.
Manhattanville’s next game will take place on the road on Wednesday against the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy starting at 7 p.m.
