Elmhurst, Ill. — The Carthage College men’s basketball team (12-6, 4-3 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) defeated CCIW-opponent Elmhurst College (9-8, 1-5 CCIW), 74-64, on “Super Bowl Sunday,” February 1 at R.A. Faganel Hall in Elmhurst, Ill. The win, Carthage’s third straight, leaves the Redmen in fourth place in the conference, one game behind in the loss column to Augustana College (Ill., 6-2), Wheaton College (Ill., 5-2) and Illinois Wesleyan University (4-2). Carthage used a 9-0 run in the first half to open up a nine-point lead, 24-15, at 6:00, and the Redmen led by six points at halftime, 38-32. The Bluejays tied the game, 43-43, at 14:28 second half. Carthage used another 9-0 run to go back up by nine, 53-42, on a layup by Kevin Menard who injured his right thumb on the play and left the game. Elmhurst got as close as five points, 52-47, before Carthage used a 13-4 run to go up by 14, 65-51 at 2:50 on a three-pointer by Scott Hood. The Redmen went on to win by 10, 74-64. Carthage shot 48 percent (23-48), while the Bluejays shot 41 percent (24-59). Theo Powell led the Redmen with 19 points on seven-of-12 field goals and five-of-six from the free-throw line, along with four rebounds and five assists. Scott Hood had 14 points, Pat Kalamatas 11 points and eight rebounds, and Trevor Cockayne chipped in 10 points. Chris Martin topped the Bluejays with game highs of 21 points and 18 rebounds.
