Wooster 80, Transylvania 74

WOOSTER, Ohio — Transylvania battled the second ranked team in the nation to the wire Thursday, but fell short, losing to Wooster 80-74 in the championship game of the Wooster Kiwanis Classic.

Transy (8-2), which took a seven game winning streak into the contest, got 28 points from sophomore forward Joey Searle. The Nicholasville native has 103 points in his last four games for an average of better than 25 points an outing.

Wooster (11-0) placed three players in double figures, led by Tom Port's 25 points and 11 rebounds. Tim Vandervaat added 24 points, including some crucial free throws down the stretch.

Transy led by as many as 10 points in the first half and took a 34-33 lead at intermission. Searle had 16 points in the opening period, hitting four of seven from three-point range. Transy was six of 11 from three-point range in the first half and 13 of 27 overall compared to 13 of 25 overall for Wooster, three of eight from long range.

Neither team led by more than three over the first 15 minutes of the final period. Matt Schlingman's layup gave Wooster a five-point cushion, 72-67, with 4:41 to play. Marc Bain's three cut the margin to two, 72-70, with 4:11 left.

Vandervaat put the Scots back up by five, 75-70, on a free throw with 1:26 left, but Robert Pendleton again made it a two-point game with a three with 1:17 to go off an assist by Bain.

Vandervaat was fouled by Matt Finke with 38 seconds to go and he converted both shots for a 77-73 lead. Howard missed a long jumper with 30 seconds to go and Vandervaat hit two more from the line to put the Scotts up 79-73 and clinch the win.

Pendleton was the only other Pioneer in double figures with 11 points. Transy shot 50 percent from the field and 55 percent from three-point range, but it wasn't enough to upend the Scots. Wooster shot 52 percent from the field and held a 38-18 edge on the boards. The Scots also outscored the Pioneers 18-10 from the line.

Nick Feagan, seeing his first action since the first game of the year, had five points and two rebounds in 13 minutes for the Pioneers.

Transy's will host Defiance in its Heartland Conference opener on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at the Beck Center
