La Roche improves to 3-5, while Rutgers-Camden falls to 1-8.
The Scarlet Raptors took their final lead of the night, 69-68, on a layup by junior forward Josh Kennedy (Westmont, NJ/Haddon Township) with 2:33 remaining. That layup gave Kennedy 30 points on the night, as he led all scorers and added his first Rutgers-Camden double-double with a game-high 10 rebounds.
Kennedy’s final points also were the final points of the night for the Scarlet Raptors, who missed two shots and committed a pair of turnovers in the final two minutes.
Taylor’s shot put the Redhawks ahead, 70-69, and La Roche closed out the scoring on a pair of foul shots apiece by senior guard Demetris Pringle (McKees Rocks, PA/Slo Rox) and sophomore guard Stacy Grady (Wilmington, DE/A.I. DuPont).
Grady finished with 17 points for the Redhawks, while Taylor notched 15 and freshman guard Brent Dover (Vermilion, OH/Vermilion) added 13. Devin also paced La Roche with seven rebounds, while Dover added a game-high six assists.
In addition to Kennedy’s big game, senior guard Tyrone Rucker (Pennsauken, NJ/Pennsauken) scored 16 points for the Scarlet Raptors. Sophomore guard/forward Dane Nicholson (Pleasantville, NJ/Holy Spirit) had nine rebounds for the Raptors, who were out-rebounded by La Roche, 31-29.
Rucker and freshman guard Amir Fantroyal (Sicklerville, NJ/Timber Creek) each had three steals for Rutgers-Camden.
Kennedy, who also blocked two shots in addition to his double-double, had the first 30-point game for Rutgers-Camden since Rucker scored 33 points against John Jay College Jan. 12, 2004.
The Scarlet Raptors return to action Jan. 3 against host Christopher Newport University in the opening round of the Captains Shootout in Newport News, VA.
