Edmond tallied 14 points in the second half, including 10 during a 14-0 spurt that turned a five-point game into a 72-53 Quakers' edge with 3:06 remaining. The first of Edmond's three three-pointers of the half erased Guilford's lone deficit of the period and gave the hosts the lead for good (43-41) with 14:11 left.
Both teams struggled to less than 44 percent field-goal shooting in their return to the court following extended holiday breaks. The Eagles, who previously played Dec. 13, made only five-of-19 three-pointers and committed 22 turnovers that led to 23 Quakers' points. Thanks to Edmond's three-for-three performance, Guilford shot a season-high 50 percent (8-16) from three-point range, but made only 14-of-24 free throws and committed 18 turnovers.
Junior center Genaro Lawhorn (Greensboro, NC/Oak Ridge Military Academy) overcame a sluggish start and finished with 14 points and five boards in 20 minutes. Freshman center Ben Strong (Chapel Hill, NC/Chapel Hill) added 10 points and matched his career-high with seven rebounds in relief of Lawhorn. Sophomore Truitt Miller (Greenville, SC/Greenville) and rookie Eric Belkoski (Rockingham, NC/Richmond Senior) each tallied a career-best seven points off the bench.
UW-La Crosse sophomore forward Joe Werner (Chippewa Falls, WI/McDonnell) notched his third double-double of the year with 12 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Sophomore guard Chris Ask (St. Charles, MN/St. Charles) also scored 12 points on five-of-seven field-goal shooting before fouling out with just under six minutes to play.
