Cortland State 85, Embry-Riddle 77

DAYTONA BEACH, FLA. — Senior Justin O'Garrow scored 20 points to lead five Cortland double-figure scorers as the Red Dragons upset host and NAIA nationally-ranked Embry-Riddle, 85-77, at the Land of Magic Classic. Cortland is now 5-3 with the victory. The Eagles, ranked 10th in NAIA Div. II, are now 9-5.

O'Garrow finished with five rebounds and four assists. He made 11-of-14 free throws and 4-of-6 field goal attempts. Junior Brian Kirchhoff connected on 4-of-11 shots, all from three-point range, in a 15-point effort. Sophomore Dave Jutton added 14 points, including 3-of-6 shooting from the three-point arc, sophomore Rod Headley made 6-of-9 shots and finished with 13 points and junior Frank Ranieri added 12 points.

Michael Pyle led Embry-Riddle with 23 points and 12 rebounds. He made 8-of-9 shots from the floor and 6-of-8 free throws. Luis Chavez-Jacobo added 19 points.

The game featured 17 ties and 15 lead changes. Neither team led by more than five points until the final three minutes of the contest. Kirchhoff's three-pointer with 3:22 remaining broke the final tie of the evening and gave Cortland a 71-68 lead. A free throw with 3:10 left cut the lead to two, but Jutton responded with a four-point play –- hitting a three-pointer and a foul shot –- with 2:47 left to put Cortland up 75-69.

Embry-Riddle drew back within 75-73 on a Denny Joseph jumper with 1:46 left. O'Garrow and Ranieri each hit a pair of free throws in the next 40 seconds, and O'Garrow added another free throw with 52 seconds left to push the lead to 80-73. The Red Dragons made five of their final six free throws to seal the victory.

Junior Simon Skrelja contributed seven points, five rebounds and two blocked shots to the winning cause. The Red Dragons shot 54 percent from the field, including 40 percent (8-of-20) from three-point territory. The hosts shot 57 percent in the first half and 52 percent for the game.
