Women's Basketball ... Whitewater Defeats Case Western In Desert Shootout
D3 Desert Shootout in Las Vegas, Nevada
The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater defeated Case Western Reserve University (OH) 71-59 Wednesday night in a (*) championship game of the D3 Desert Shootout in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Whitewater led the entire game, including a 37-24 margin at halftime. Although Case Western out-rebounded UW-W 50-35, the Warhawks' defense limited Case to 34% shooting from the field, including a 1-16 night from beyond the three-point line. Whitewater also enjoyed a bulge at the free throw line, connecting on 22 of 26 attempts, while CWRU was just 6 of 12.
Senior forward Nya Geschke (Janesville/Parker) led UW-W with 20 points, her second 20-point game of the season and the third of the year for the Warhawks. Lindsey Buechner (F/C, fr, Cross Plains/Middleton) added 13 and senior guard Leah Thyne (Marinette) contributed 12. Case was led by junior forward Carmen Rowan, with 14 points. Freshman center Ashley Horton and senior guard Keesha Allen recorded identical double-doubles for CWRU, scoring 11 points and grabbing 11 rebounds.
The win gives UW-W a 7-4 mark, the school's best record after eleven games since the 1998-99 season when the Warhawks began that season 8-3. Head coach Keri Carollo, in her third year at UW-W, has directed the Warhawks to 6-5 and 5-6 records in the same span her first two seasons. UW-Whitewater has won four of its last five games. Case Western is now 4-4.
UW-W defeated Albright College (PA) 73-47 Tuesday evening to advance to the
tournament title game. Case Western beat Adrian College (MI) 76-55 Tuesday.
Whitewater's next game will be Monday, December 27 at Wisconsin Lutheran College in Milwaukee, and the Warhawks' next home contest will be Thursday, December 30 at 5:00 with Saint Norbert College visiting Kachel Gym in Williams Center.
