Kenyon 72, Allegheny 68

GAMBIER, Ohio — In a close game that saw eight lead changes and two ties in the second half, the Allegheny College men’s basketball team came up just short in a 72-68 defeat at Kenyon (Ohio) College Wednesday night.

The Lords (2-9, 1-1) scored the game’s first four points and did not trail in the first half, as it claimed a 36-29 lead going into halftime. Kenyon, who shot 52 percent in the first half, drained five treys in the opening period, including three by Arlen Galloway as he tallied 13 by the break. Allegheny (3-6, 0-2) stayed close with 10 points each from sophomore guard Casey McCloskey and junior forward Matt Majzlik.

Kenyon pushed their lead out to nine points at 41-32 at the 18:35 mark before Allegheny began their climb back into the contest. The Gators roared back with a 22-7 burst that featured four three-pointers, including two each from freshmen Larry Sharp and Bill Babe. A second triple from Babe at the 10:16 mark capped the run and gave AC a 54-48 advantage.

Kenyon fought right back with the next six points to tie the game and neither team would hold larger than a two-point lead until the final two minutes. Allegheny freshman guard Justin Schmitt buried a three to give the Gators a 61-60 lead with 4:47 to play and then knocked down a jumper with 2:38 left to knot the score at 63-63. But Kenyon’s Andrew Good swished a three to put the Lords ahead for good with 1:50 to play and Kenyon went 6-6 from the foul line in the final minute to seal the conference win.

The Gators lost despite a 35-34 advantage on the boards, including a 13-5 margin on the offensive glass. Allegheny finished the game shooting 39 percent from the floor, while Kenyon hit on 51 percent of their shots.

Allegheny had three players reach double figures for the game, led by 19 points from McCloskey, who also dished out a team-high five assists. Schmitt tallied 11 points, six rebounds and two steals in the game, while Majzlik finished with 10 points and a team-best eight rebounds.

Good led the Lords attack with 22 points and seven rebounds. Forward Tyler Rehm was the only other Kenyon player in double figures with 12.

Allegheny is now off for the holidays and will return to the court Jan. 3 when Penn State Behrend invades the Wise Center for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off.
