Beloit 79, Carthage 60

BELOIT, Wis. — The Carthage College men’s basketball team (5-4, 0-0 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) lost to non-conference opponent Beloit College (3-5), 79-60, on Tuesday, December 21 at Flood Arena in Beloit, Wis. The Redmen had an eight-point lead in the first half, 29-21, at 6:23 before falling behind by three points at the break, 35-32. The Buccaneers took command of the game by scoring the first 12 points of the second half and taking a 15-point lead, 47-32, at 17:22. Beloit still led by 15, 51-36, at 15:09 before Carthage closed to within 10, 51-41, at 13:51. That 10-point deficit was as close as the Redmen would get. Beloit pushed the lead to 22 points, 70-48, at 6:44 and led by as much as 25 points, 79-54, at 2:43. The Buccaneers went on to win by 19, 79-60. Carthage shot just 37 percent for the game (18-49), while Beloit blistered the nets at a 60 percent clip (30-50), including a phenomenal 70 percent (16-23) in the second half. Carthage had nobody with double-figure scoring. Mark Morrison and Malik Imani each had nine points. Nick Hendry had 16 points and Josh Hinz each had 16 points for the Buccaneers. Carthage travels to Thousand Oaks, Calif., on December 29-30 to play in the California Lutheran University “Thrivent Financial” Tournament at the California Lutheran University Gymnasium. Carthage will play Gettysburg College on Wednesday, December 29 (6 p.m., PST), with the host Kingsmen taking on Central College (8 p.m., PST). The tournament concludes on Thursday, December 30 with the consolation and championship games (6/8 p.m., PST)
