LeMoyne 74, Union 55

Schenectady, NY — SCHENECTADY, N.Y.—Le Moyne broke open a three-point game early in the second half by outscoring Union 20-8 over a 12-minute time span and the Division II Dolphins went on to defeat the Division III Dutchmen, 74-55, Saturday at the Viniar Athletic Center. The win was the first in seven outings for Le Moyne while the Dutchmen dropped their fourth straight to fall to 2-5 as they head into the Holiday Recess.

The game marked the return of Dolphin head Coach Steve Evans and assistant coach Todd Montana to Union. Evans, who was the Dutchmen’s starting point guard from 1990 to 1994, finished his outstanding career with 861 points and 476 assists. His 192 assists in his senior season of 1993-94 ranks third on the Dutchmen’s all-time while his career total is third all-time. Montana, who is the son of Union head coach Bob Montana, was a two-year assistant for the Dutchmen, who went 38-20 during his tenure.

Down by nine at the half, 37-28, Union pulled to within 39-36 with 17:33 on the clock on a jumper by senior forward Devon Bruce. Le Moyne then scored 11 of the game’s next 14 points to take a 50-39 lead with 12:34 left on a layup by Matt Cooper. The Dutchmen never got closer than nine points the remainder of the game.

Cooper finished with 20 points and nine rebounds for the Dolphins while Jason Holmes added 17 markers with Trent Morgan and Dan Cromwell each knocking down 10 points. Bruce led the Dutchmen with 19 makers while junior forward Brian Scordato added 11. The Dolphins finished with a 38-16 rebounding advantage and shot 60.7% from the field while Union hit 11 of its 17 field goal attempts (40.7%).
