The Bluejays fell behind early in the contest as Carroll quickly jumped out to an early advantage. With Elmhurst’s Chris Martin on the bench in early foul trouble, Carroll was able to take a 31-19 halftime lead. The Pioneers shot 43.3 percent from the floor (13-of-30) and 28.6 percent from 3-point range (4-of-14). Elmhurst struggled with its shooting, hitting 9-of-24 shots (37.5 percent) and missing all seven 3-point attempts.
Carroll, shot the lights out in the second half, hitting 19-of-25 field goal attempts (76.0 percent), including 7-of-9 from 3-point range (77.8 percent). Elmhurst shot 48.3 percent (14-of-29) from the floor and 42 percent (3-of-7) from 3-point range in the second half.
For the game, Elmhurst shot 43.4 percent (23-of-53) from the floor and 21.4 percent (3-of-14) from 3-point range. Carroll hit 32-of-55 shots from the floor (58.2 percent) including 11-of-23 3-point attempts (47.8 percent).
Elmhurst was led by Nick Michael’s 14 points. Martin added 13 points and was named to the all-tournament team. Patrick Trierweiler and Jay Brizzolara added eight and seven points, respectively, off the bench.
Carroll was led by Jason Scheper’s 21 points and 10 rebounds. Ben Hickethier added 20 points and nine rebounds while Nathan Drury added 15 points. James Johnson set a single-game tournament record with 12 assists. Scheper was named tournament MVP and Hickethier was also named to the all-tournament team.
The Bluejays will play host to Wisconsin-Platteville on December 30, at 7:30 p.m.
