In Texas Lutheran’s Memorial Gymnasium, Nik Summers (San Antonio/Marshall) opened the game’s scoring with a three-pointer and a layup to give TLU a lead it never relinquished.
TLU improved to 5-3 overall and to 4-1 in the American Southwest Conference. Austin College fell to 2-7 overall and 1-5 in the ASC.
Summers paced TLU with 21 points. He had 13 points at the break.
Summers entered the game as the conference’s leading three-point shooter (hitting 54 percent of his attempts beyond the arc). He nailed five of his seven three-point shots against the Kangaroos.
Texas Lutheran hit 67.9 percent of its shots in the first half and ended the game with a rebounding edge of 15 (40-25).
Austin College shot 33.3 percent in the first half and 39.1 percent in the second half. The Kangaroos were hurt by 22 turnovers.
TLU senior post Tommy Stolhandske (San Antonio/Churchill) added 16 points, eight assists, seven rebounds and two steals.
Texas Lutheran also received 15 points off the bench from junior wing Will Hudson (San Antonio/Churchill) and 12 points from senior guard Mike Ekanem (Sugar Land/Terry). Jerrod Carpenter (Utopia/Utopia) scored 11 points.
Ekanem had four steals, all in the first half. TLU finished with 12 steals and 25 assists. The Bulldogs committed just 12 turnovers.
Anthony Holman (North Richland Hills/Birdville) was the lone Kangaroo in double figures. He scored 11 points.
Texas Lutheran continues American Southwest Conference play this Saturday with a road game in Dallas against the University of Texas-Dallas. Game time is set for 5 p.m.
