Defiance College cruised to their seventh win of the year, 91-65 over Oberlin College at the Weaner Center, as junior Curt Croy sank his 1000th point as a Yellow Jacket.
Croy and Matt Voland each led the Jackets with 16 points, while each also had five boards and Croy tied for the team lead in assists with C.J. Johnson with five. Brett Hammons and Matt Muratori had seven and six rebounds respectively, while Johnson, Phil Blasko, and Hammons all scored in double figures.
Quinton Spencer led the Yeomen with 23 points, seven rebounds, and two assists. Oberlin was forced into 15 turnovers while the Jackets committed just nine. DC also outrebounded the Yeomen 38-28.
DC led by just three at the half, 40-37, but got OC into foul trouble early in the second period. The Jackets hit12-of-14 second-half free throws and shot 53% from the floor in the second half.
The game seemed to swing on one critical play. Three and a half minutes into the second half, Voland drove to the lane and had his lay-in blocked late by Spencer, sending the Jackets into a rage over the lack of a goal-tending call. Defiance led by just three at that point, but the shot of adrenaline gave DC a boost, causing a 19-4 Jackets run that ended with a Croy three-pointer at the 10:37 mark, giving Defiance a commanding 4-46 lead.
The Yellow Jackets built their lead up to 27 on a Jeremey Fruhwirth three-pointer at the four-minute mark and closed out the scoring when Dustin Looser converted a lay-up to make the score 91-65.
The win takes Defiance to 7-2 on the year and gives the Jackets a two-week holiday break before traveling to the Otterbein Tournament on December 29th and 30th.
Oberlin falls to 1-8 with the loss.
