The Thoroughbreds (5-2) shot 50 percent (25-of-50) in the victory and canned 12 triples.
After the Presidents took an early three-point advantage, a 21-8 Skidmore run during a seven-minute stretch made it a 26-16 SC lead at the 8:59 mark of the first half.
W&J (1-5) chipped away at the lead and a three-pointer by sophomore guard Brandon Studer (Johnstown, Pa./Conemaugh Valley) with 47 seconds left brought the Presidents to within 37-35 after 20 minutes of play.
Freshman guard Tyler Trutza (Bay Village, Ohio/Bay) knocked down a trey to open the second half and give Washington & Jefferson a 40-39 lead, but the Thoroughbreds scored 14 of the next 21 points and never trailed the rest of the way. Greg Gallagher and Corry hit a pair of triples midway through the half to keep the lead in double digits.
Cortlandt Toczlowski added 12 points on 5-of-10 shooting for Skidmore, while Steve Yaeger netted 10 points. The Thoroughbreds held a 35-22 rebounding advantage and had 19 assists on 25 baskets.
Studer poured in a game-high 24 points for the Presidents on 8-of-16 shooting, including six three-pointers. He also picked up five steals. Sophomore guard Jon Koch (New Kensington, Pa./Plum) was the only other President in double figures with 12 points (11 in the first half). Trutza finished with eight points, six rebounds and five assists.
W&J shot 38 percent (22-for-58) and just 33 percent (11-of-33) from beyond the arc.
W&J hosts Union (N.Y.) tomorrow evening in its final home contest before the holidays. Tip-off is slated for 7:00 pm.
