Christopher Newport 69, Randolph-Macon 66

ASHLAND, Va. — Junior forward Roderic Carey totaled game-highs of 21 points, 11 rebounds, and four steals to lead the visiting Christopher Newport University men’s basketball team to a 69-66 victory over Randolph-Macon College in non-conference action on Sunday, December 12. Carey shot 6-for-10 (60.0%) from the floor, and was also 9-for-10 (90.0%) at the free throw line.

Also for the Captains, senior guard Blake Brookman had 14 points on 6-of-10 (60.0%) shooting, plus seven rebounds and four assists. He scored six points in the last five minutes for the visitors. All seven of his rebounds came at the defensive end of the floor. Junior guard Jeremy Romeo added 13 points, including 5-of-6 (83.3%) foul shots. Senior forward Brandon Brooks contributed with 10 points and three assists off the bench.

The win improves the Captains to a perfect 5-0 overall this year. The Yellow Jackets drop to 3-5 on the season.

Things were back and forth in the first half, with 12 lead changes and four ties. The biggest advantage for either team was seven points, as Randolph-Macon was ahead 29-22 with 6:33 left before halftime. The Yellow Jackets led by three points at the break, 38-35.

Randolph-Macon continued to lead for about the first 12 minutes of the second period, but the margin was never more than six points. With the Yellow Jackets up 56-54, a basket by Christopher Newport senior forward Steven Murrer, assisted by sophomore guard Dont’a Selden, tied things up at 56-56 with 8:22 remaining. Randolph-Macon would never lead again.

There were two more ties down the stretch, the last at 60-60 on two foul shots by Randolph-Macon junior forward Justin Wansley with 6:07 left in the contest. A free throw by Carey made the score 61-60 in favor of the Captains, and they would not surrender the lead.

With the visitors ahead by five points, 67-62, Randolph-Macon reduced the deficit to one point with about one minute remaining on back-to-back layups by sophomore guard Loren Sisson and sophomore forward Philip Hawley. A dunk by Carey off an assist by Selden with :27 remaining gave Christopher Newport the 69-66 margin. The Yellow Jackets did have a chance with several three-point attempts in the closing seconds, but could not convert.

Following the performances by Carey, Brookman, Romeo, and Brooks, Christopher Newport’s Murrer finished with seven points on 3-of-4 (75.0%) shooting, plus eight rebounds. Six of his rebounds were defensive. Freshman forward Krizzio Washington grabbed seven rebounds, five of those at the defensive end of the court.

Randolph-Macon was led by junior guard Patrick Gill, with 18 points and three assists. He made 4-of-8 (50.0%) three-pointers, and also was a perfect 6-for-6 at the foul line. Senior guard Justin Moyer totaled 13 points, including 2-of-4 (50.0%) three-point baskets and 5-of-6 (83.3%) free throws, plus two assists and two steals. Hawley added 11 points, nine rebounds, and three assists. Wansley finished with 10 points and nine rebounds. Six of his rebounds were defensive. Sophomore guard Adam Krovic came off the bench for seven points, shooting 2-for-3 (66.7%) from the floor and 3-for-4 (75.0%) at the line.
