Emory and Henry 96, Averett 68

EMORY, Va. — Sunday’s men’s basketball game at the King Center in Emory, VA featured a match-up between a mentor and his former student. The mentor came out on top of this contest, with Bob Johnson leading Emory & Henry College to a 96-68 win over Averett University.

Averett head coach Jimmy Allen played under Johnson from 1989-1993 and later served as his assistant for two seasons. Allen helped lead the Wasps to four straight NCAA appearances and a 1993 appearance in the “Sweet 16.”

The first half was not a favorable one for Allen and his Cougars (2-3), as they trailed 48-26 at the intermission. Averett led 4-3 early, before a 19-2 run by the Wasps (4-5) gave Emory & Henry the momentum and a 22-6 advantage. The Cougars shot 24 percent in the session, while the interior play of the Wasps led to 44 percent shooting. Gary Kerns’ 11 first half points led the way for the home team. The one bright spot for the Cougars was the 11-for-11 effort from the line by Jeremy Haskins in the first half. He netted 15 in the opening period.

Following the intermission the Cougars trimmed the lead to 48-31 after an interior score by Andrew Boor and a Sterling Williams 3-pointer. However, the Wasps answered with a 19-4 run to extend their advantage to 67-35 with 13 minutes remaining in the contest, sealing the win.

Haskins led Averett in the scoring column with 20 points, including a perfect 13-of-13 from the charity stripe. Cameron Brown netted 13, while Boor was responsible for 12. Luke Hammond added nine points for the Cougars. Haskins also led Averett with six boards.

Emory & Henry was paced by a 22-point effort from Kerns. Davon Jones added 14 points for the Wasps. Will Schwartzstein grabbed 10 caroms to lead Emory & Henry in that category.

The Cougars will return to action on Wednesday night, as they travel to Newport News Apprentice and look to sweep the Builders. Averett defeated Apprentice in the Grant Center on November 30 by an 81-65 final.
