The Colonials, 5-1 overall and 1-1 in the Little East Conference, built a 21-point advantage, 37-16 at intermission. Their lead grew to 27 points, 43-16, 1:13 into the second half before Southern Maine started its comeback.
Senior guard Jason Levecque (Westbrook, ME) lifted his team during the comeback with a thrilling one-handed dunk over two Colonials defenders to cut his team’s deficit to nine points, 47-38 with 10:50 remaining in the game. He finished with a game-high 22 points after connecting on 12 of 17 free throws.
The closest USM would get would be three points, 59-56 following a three pointer by Foster Oakley (Farmington, ME) with 1:13 left.
Kyle Norfleet (Waterbury, CT) and Greg Cole (Terrytown, NY) led WestConn with 14 points, each. Norfleet got the start, replacing Jay Reginatto (Torrington, CT) who has been nursing an ankle injury all season.
Brice Assie (Bridgeport, CT) added 12 points, nine rebounds and four blocks for the Colonials.
Mike Francoeur (Somersworth, NH) added 13 points for the Huskies, now 3-5 overall and 1-1 in the conference.
