Wheaton (Ill.) 73, Wabash 54

Crawfordsville, Ind. — The Wheaton College men’s basketball team (7-1) rebounded from its first loss of the season with a 73-54 victory over Wabash College (4-5) in the consolation game of Wabash’s “Pete Thorne Invitational” on Saturday. On Friday Wheaton lost a 70-67 contest to Marian College (Ind.) in the first round of the tournament.

Wheaton made its first 13 field goal attempts of the game to jump out to a 33-11 lead with 11:25 left to play in the first half. The Thunder continued to control the contest in the first half, leading the Little Giants 50-20 at halftime.

Wheaton freshman Kent Raymond had the best game of his young collegiate career with 27 points on 10-for-14 shooting from the field, including 5-for-7 from three-point range. Raymond also snatched four steals and recorded three assists as he was named to the all-tournament team. Senior Jonathan Steven scored 22 points on 8-for-14 shooting from the field, including a 3-for-5 effort from behind the three-point arc. Senior guard Jon Nielson scored 13 points, with seven assists and three steals. Senior Martin Trimiew scored six points and added a game-high eight rebounds. Trimiew was an all-tournament selection for his strong effort on the weekend that saw him record career high’s of 28 points and 19 rebounds in Friday’s loss to Marian.

Adonis Joseph led Wabash with 12 points and three assists. Kyle Medeiros scored nine points off of the Little Giants’ bench and Ryan Stephens also scored nine points on 4-for-4 shooting from the field.

The Thunder shot a season-high 55.8% (29-52) field goal percentage in the game, including a sensational 69% (20-29) effort in the first half. Wheaton also shot 50% (10-20) from three-point range and 83.3% (5-6) from the free throw line. The Little Giants shot 40% (20-50) from the field, with 33.3% (4-12) from three-point range and 83.3% (10-12) from the free throw line. Wheaton out-scored Wabash 18-4 in fast break points and the Thunder scored 28 points off of Little Giant turnovers. Wabash out-rebounded the Thunder 31-25, with a 15-8 edge on the offensive glass.
