Staten Island 99, Rowan 75

STATEN ISLAND, NY — The College of Staten Island Women's Basketball Team used a balanced scoring attack and put together one of the finest team efforts in recent memory on Saturday, as they thoroughly beat Rowan University, 99-75, at the Sports and Recreation Center in the 2004 CUNY/NJAC Challenge. The Profs and the Dolphins entered the game with identical 6-1 records, and Rowan currently sits atop the NJAC standings with an undefeated conference record. Junior Kim Thompson (Staten Island, NY/St. John Villa) led all scorers, posting a career-high 35 points as the Dolphins improved to 7-1 on the season. Their next action will come on Saturday, December 18th as they will face Maryville University (MO) as part of the Cruzin' Classic in Nassau, Bahamas. After falling behind 8-2 early on, the Dolphins found their composure and opened up a 16 point lead, 49-33 late in the first half before settling for a 14 point cusion at the break, 50-36. The Dolphins opened up a 20 point margin, 63-43 five minutes into the second half, but they were forced to fight off foul trouble all day long, as four starters were saddled with four fouls for much of the second half allowing Rowan back in the game. The Profs, led by senior Kami Bernardo's (Florence, NJ/Florence Twp.) 16 points, went on a 16-3 run over five minutes to cut the lead to 7 points at 80-73 with 5:51 to play. But the Dolphins would go on a 19-2 run to end the game, defeating the team currently ranked 26th in the nation by D3hoops.com. Four players scored in double-digits for the Dolphins, led by Thompson's 35. Sophomore Acasha Gordon (Staten Island, NY/Curtis) continued her stellar play, scoring 29 points, while senior guard Stephanie Iosue (Staten Island, NY/St. Peter's) added 19 points. Defending CUNYAC player of the year Jacclyn Rock (Staten Island, NY/New Dorp) scored 14 points and grabbed a game-high 16 rebounds.
