St. Cloud State 73, St. John's 56

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. — St. Cloud State University made 18-of-21 shots from the field in the second half to erase a 29-28 deficit at halftime to defeat Saint John’s University 73-56 on Saturday, Dec. 11, at Sexton Arena on the SJU campus.

A crowd of over 2,100 watched the Huskies win their fifth straight game in the series with the Johnnies. SCSU now leads the all-time series with SJU 57-44.

SCSU went on a 26-6 run in the first eight minutes of the second half to take a 54-35 lead. SCSU’s biggest lead of the game came with 5:11 remaining at 68-43. SJU’s largest lead of the game was at 10-7 with 13:40 remaining in the first half.

SJU was led by junior post Paul Henrichs with season-highs of 22 points and 14 rebounds, while sophomore point guard Matt Ohme had 14 points. The Johnnies shot 39.6 percent (19-of-48) from the field and 25.0 percent (4-of-16) from the three-point line. The Johnnies had a 23-15 rebound advantage in the first half and ended the game with 35 rebounds, compared to 30 for the Huskies.

For SCSU, senior guard Nate Miller and sophomore forward Matt Hanson each had 14 points, while junior forward Pat Weihert collected 10 points. Hanson had seven rebounds in the game. The Huskies ended the game shooting 55.6 percent (30-of-54) and 42.1 percent (8-of-19) from behind the three-point line. SCSU struggled from the line, making only 5-of-14 shots. Six of SCSU’s eight made three-point baskets came in the second half. The Huskies only made 2-of-12 thre-point baskets in the first 20 minutes of play. SCSU had six blocked shots in the game.

SCSU improves to 7-2 overall, while SJU had its two-game win streak broken and fell to 3-4 overall. The Huskies will travel to Upper Iowa at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 14, while the Johnnies will host Coe, Iowa at 3 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 18, in Collegeville. SJU has played six games in the last 11 days.
