Farmingdale State 75, SUNY-Maritime 72

Throggs Neck, NY — In the second part of a double header of basketball, the Privateers of Maritime College dropped a heartbreaker to the Rams of Farmingdale State 75-72 in overtime. The Rams were able to extend the game past regulation after a three pointer by forward Damien McKenzie (Lakeview, NY/Malverne) with barely any time left on the clock. Farmingdale then out scored the Privateers 8-5 in the OT marking the first time either team held a lead at the end of a period.

The first half was a solid defensive struggle on both ends, with score at the half resulting in a tie at 28. Then the Privateers came out a little soft at the start of the second half, but after falling to a 40-33 deficit, they fought back. Senior guard Gary Browne (Blauvelt, NY/Tappan Zee) caught on fire at the right moment hitting three three-pointers in a row to give Maritime a 62-58 lead with about four minutes left in the half. Maritime’s run began after a monstrous jam from junior guard Gerard Danzy (Monroeville, AL/Hillcrest), Danzy had an amazing game finishing with 15 points, five rebounds, five assists, four steals and two blocks.

Browne ended the game with 15 points, hitting four shots from downtown. Juniors Jonathan Holler (N. Tonawanda, NY/Cardinal O’Hara), Robert Benton (Montgomery, AL/GW Carver), and senior Marc Lashley (Queens, NY/Holy Cross) each had ten points a piece. Benton came just shy of his second double-double in a row grabbing nine boards. McKenzie had the team high for Farmingdale with 23 points and 12 rebounds, while junior Kenny McMillian (Bronx, NY/All Hallows) scored 20 points with 13 rebounds. The Rams improve to 2-0 in the Skyline and 3-3 on the year. The Privateers are now 0-8 on the year and 0-2 in the Skyline Conference.

This was Maritime’s last game until after winter break when they return to action on January 8th as they travel to Hackettstown, NJ to take on the Cyclones of Centenary College.
