Minnesota-Morris 120, North Central (Minn.) 82

MORRIS, Mn — The University of Minnesota-Morris scored the first eight points of the game and 14 of the first 16 en-route to a record setting 120-82 win over North Central University Saturday in college men’s basketball.

The Cougars connected on 10 of their first 14 shots in the game, and during one two minute plus stretch, hit on six of seven from the floor to take a 16-4 lead and never looked back.

Minnesota-Morris shot a blistering 60 percent (24-40) in the games first 20 minutes and built a 65-40 advantage at the break. The Cougars also had 18 points in the paint in the first half and turned the ball over only three times.

By the end of the first half, Minnesota-Morris had three players in double figures and 10 players that had scored.

Matt Stenehjem, Brent Durensky each had 16 in the first half and Adam Girtman had 11.

North Central cut the Cougar lead to nine at 16-7 but a pair of free throws by Matt Stenehjem converted on a pair of free throws and gave UMM a double digit lead at 18-7 with just over 15 minutes to play in the first half.

That would be as close as the Rams would get as the Cougars maintained a double digit lead the remainder of the game.

The Cougars did cool down a bit in the second half, shooting 49 percent, but managed to shoot 54 percent (46-85) for the game.

The 120 points is a new single game record for points in a game for UMM and everyone that played, scored.

Matt Stenehjem led the way with a career and game high 22, Adam Girtman added 21. Stenehjem added 10 rebounds for his second double-double of the season.

Brent Durensky had 19, David Holler added 13 and Adam Sullivan 10 and four blocks.

Minnesota-Morris had a season high 31 assists, led by Kevin Cunniff had a team high seven. Adam Girtman and Corey Kelzenberg each had five and the Cougars out rebounded the Rams 52-28.

The win snapped a three game losing streak for the Cougars who are now 5-3 overall and will host Concordia-Moorhead this Tuesday December 14 at 7:00 at the UMM P.E. Center.
