The Messiah College Falcons (7-1) rolled over the Eastern University Eagles (3-4) 85-55 in a non-league men’s basketball match-up Saturday night.
Dave Carter (Warrenton, VA) had a game-high 19 points and Jared Yoder (Lancaster, PA) finished with 18 of his own to help the Falcons. Matt Henninger (Carlisle, PA) and Quinn McCullough (Glen Rock, PA) also scored in double figures with 14 and 11 respectively. Yoder and Henninger also pulled down 9 rebounds each in the effort for Messiah.
Eastern was led by Joseph Manzo’s (Freehold, NJ) 11 points. He was the only Eagle to score in double figures. While Eric Houston grabbed a team-high 6 rebounds for Eastern.
With two starters out with injuries, it seemed as though the Falcons might have a tough go early on, but the bench stepped in and used an effective three-point attack to pick up the slack. Messiah shot a blazing 58 percent from beyond the arc in the first half, building a 23 point half time lead and never looked back.
The Eagles came out of the second half quickly and pulled as close as 17 with 14 minutes remaining, but it wasn’t to be. The Falcon defense tightened up and held Eastern without point for the next 5 minutes all but putting the game away for Messiah.
The Falcons shot 56 percent from the floor for the game while holding their opponent to just 31 percent. The Eagles lone bright spot came at the foul line shooting 93 percent on the game.
Messiah returns to action next Saturday when they will take on Chestnut Hill before traveling to the Carribean to participate in the Goombay Shootout. The Falcons next play in Grantham on January 10th when they will make up a rescheduled game with Delaware Valley. Game time is set for 7:30pm.
