Maryville (Tenn.) 98, Averett 76

MARYVILLE, Tenn. — The Averett University men’s basketball team was unable to answer the interior play and size of Maryville College, as the Scots defeated the Cougars Saturday by a 98-76 final at Maryville College.

The Cougars (2-2) started slow and trailed 49-27 after the first half behind a nine-point effort from Maryville’s (5-2) Raul Placeres. The Scots outscored Averett from the free throw line in the opening stanza 17-7; Maryville was 17-of-24 from the line and the Cougars 7-of-8 in the first 20 minutes. In fact, Averett was whistled for their 10th foul, putting the Scots into the double-bonus, with 9:28 remaining in the half. Conversely, the bigger and more physical Scots didn’t pick up their second foul until 4:58 remaining in the period.

Billy Gardner highlighted the Averett scoring in the first half with 10 points, as he was a perfect 5-of-5 from the floor. Sterling Williams added six points and Aaron Shelton netted five in the period.

After trailing by as many as 26 in the second half, the Cougars made a late run to trim the lead to 86-72 with three minutes remaining. Unfortunately for Averett, it was as close as they would get, as Maryville held on late.

Williams, who leads the USA South Conference in scoring, paced the Cougars with 16 points in the loss. Gardner followed with 13 points. Jeremy Haskins scored nine, and Andrew Boor tallied eight. Haskins and Gardner led the Cougars on the boards with five rebounds each. However, Maryville controlled the glass and outrebounded the Cougars 52-33. They scored 18 second chance points in the contest.

Five Scots scored in double figures, led by Bradley Blair’s 16 points. Jeremy Holliday notched a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds.
