Howard Payne 73, LeTourneau 59

BROWNWOOD, Tx. — Sloppy play led to the LeTourneau University men’s basketball team losing to American Southwest Conference rival Howard Payne University, 73-59 on Saturday afternoon in the Brownwood Coliseum.
The YellowJackets (2-6, 1-5) committed 23 turnovers and shot just 35.5 percent from the floor. The ‘Jackets jumped out to an early 17-10 lead, but Howard Payne responded with a 16-0 run midway through the first half. HPU (2-6, 2-4) held onto the lead the rest of the first half and extended the lead in the second half. LeTourneau could not get any closer than 13 points over the last 10 minutes of play.
LeTourneau senior guard Julius McClaskey scored the 1,000th point of his career on a three-pointer at the 15:51 mark of the first half. He is the third LETU men’s player to reach the 1,000-point mark in the last three years. The other two are Tim Dygert and Anthony Craig.
HPU’s Johnathan Maxwell led all scorers with 22 points and he also pulled down nine rebounds. Tim Stary registered a double-double for the home team with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Kendrick Johnson came off the bench to score 11 points and grab eight boards.
McClaskey led the YellowJackets with 13 points and seven rebounds. Freshman Tim Butler scored 10 points and was the only other ‘Jacket player to score in double figures.
Howard Payne shot 42.5 percent from the floor and out rebounded LETU, 52-36. Neither team handled the ball well as HPU committed 20 turnovers.
This was the final game of the first semester for LeTourneau. The YellowJackets hit the hardwood on January 3 when the team travels to NCAA Division I foe Sam Houston State University in Huntsville at 7 o’clock.
