Washington U. came out of the gate early by knocking down three early three-pointers to take an early 12-4 lead. Fontbonne (0-8) responded with a 9-0 run to gain its first lead of the game at 13-12 with 14:12 remaining. The Bears answered right back by scoring the next 12 points, but could not put the Griffins away as they responded with a 10-0 run of their own to cut the WU Lead to 27-25.
Senior Rob Keller scored 11 points in the first-half on 5-of-8 shooting. The Bears shot 57.1 percent (16-of-28) from the field in the first half while holding the Griffins to a 38.2 clip.
The Bears continued to hold a slim lead early in the second half, but extended it to double digits (47-36) after junior Scott Stone's deep three-pointer from the corner. A three-pointer by sophomore Brandon York gave the Bears its largest lead of the game at 59-41 with 11:13 remaining.
Keller finished with a game-high 16 points while York added 12 points off the bench. Stone also had 12 points, four assists and four steals in the win. The Bears defense forced 21 turnovers and held Fontbonne to 35.5 percent shooting from the field.
Washington University (6-3) returns to action Sat., Dec. 18 at home against Blackburn College. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
