Bates beat Husson 74-69 to improve to 9-1, but it didn’t come without a scare down the stretch.
Trailing by 17 with 6:30 remaining, Husson went on a 17-2 run and pulled within two, 71-69, at the 2:40 mark. Tyler Muzzy ’07 (Greenville, Maine) hit two 3-pointers during that run and finished with a game-high 29 points.
Gerrity, who finished with nine points, was fouled again with 1:13 remaining. He sank one of two free throws, extending Bates’ lead to 72-69.
Husson, however, was called for traveling on its next possession.
Jon Furbush ’06 (South Portland, Maine) then put the game out of reach, hitting a pair of free throws with :08 on the clock. He finished with 10 points and eight rebounds.
Zak Ray ’07 (Bangor, Maine) also scored in double digits for Bates, finishing with 10 points, six assists and three steals. Rob Stockwell ’07 (Temple, N.H.) scored a team-high 23 points.
Husson (1-4) shot 44.6 percent from the field and 47.8 percent beyond the arc. Muzzy, 11-for-15 overall, was 5-for-5 on 3-point attempts. Sheraud Lee ’08 (Bridgeport, Conn.) was 3-for-5 behind the arc, also connecting twice during Husson’s 17-2 second-half run. Buddy Leavitt ’06 (Guilford, Maine) finished with 17 points, including three 3-pointers.
Bates, set to go on winter break, will play next on Jan. 4 at Plymouth State. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Husson will host Maine-Presque Isle Monday, Dec. 13 at 7 p.m.
