Golden Flyers (3-4) will play Mitchell in Saturday's consolation game

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (Dec. 10, 2004) – For the second time in four days Friday, visiting Oswego proved to be better than Nazareth in men's basketball as the Lakers outscored the Golden Flyers, 84-71, in the opening round of the annual Joe King Tournament played at the Kidera Gymnasium.

Oswego (7-0 overall) will play RIT in Saturday's championship game at 3 p.m. Nazareth (3-4) will play Mitchell College in the consolation game at 1 p.m. (WHTK-AM 1280). RIT defeated Mitchell, 89-55, in Friday's first game.

Oswego junior Ahmad Mims led a contingent of four Oswego players in double figures with 24 points on 9-for-13 shooting. Seniors Ben Oliver and Dave Ponza each added 16 points and sophomore guard Nick Perioli scored 14.

Oswego also defeated Nazareth last Tuesday, 78-63.

Nazareth's Ryan Shipley led all scorers with 25 points to go with a game-high 10 rebounds.

The Golden Flyers led by as many as 10 points, 22-12, in the first half before Oswego rallied by scoring the last eight points of the half to secure a 44-36 lead at the break. Nazareth staged a comeback in the second half and took a 57-56 lead with 9:32 to go following five straight points by Caswell Smith.

Oswego regained the lead for good on its next possession. Baskets by Oliver and Ponza and a pair of free throws by Ponza stretched the lead to five, 62-57, and the Lakers pulled away from there.

In addition to the production from Shipley, who made 11 of 17 shots from the field, Nazareth got 11 points from freshman Joe Canori and 10 points and eight rebounds from freshman Kyle Nelson.
