The Owls (2-5) jumped out to an early 13-3 lead over winless Albertus Magnus (0-5) and never looked back. Westfield led 41-22 at halftime and expanded its lead by shooting a sizzling 65 percent in the second half.
Westfield sophomore guard Ricky Ogboin (Boston/Brighton) scored 15 points and freshman guard Andy Deffer (Beverly) came off the bench to score 13 points in the final 10 minutes. Deffer was 5-for-6 from the field, including 3-for-3 from 3-point range.
Junior point guard Bayete Gordon (Amherst) directed Westfield’s high scoring attack with 10 assists in 22 minutes of action. Freshman guard Steven Martins (Westfield/Westfield Voke) started for the Owls and recorded seven points – all in the first half – four rebounds and three steals.
Senior guard Tim Russell (Burlington, Conn.) led Albertus Magnus with 16 points; he entered the contest averaging 30 points per game. Sophomore center Vaughn Butler had nine points and a game-high 11 rebounds for the undermanned Falcons, who only fielded eight players.
