Evergreen State 70, Pacific Lutheran 60

TACOMA, Wash. — A 31-9 run in the first half put Pacific Lutheran in front 33-16, but Evergreen State climbed their way back into the contest by halftime and went on to record a 70-60 victory over the Lutes in a non-conference men's basketball game tonight in Olson Auditorium.

The Lutes slipped to 2-6 overall, while Evergreen improved to 5-6.

The Geoducks jumped out to a 7-2 lead, but the Lutes answered with 15 straight points for a 17-7 advantage. Pacific Lutheran then scored 16 of the next 25 points for their biggest lead of the night, a 33-16 lead with 4:51 left in the first half. Evergreen responded with a 12-0 run to end the half, bringing the Geoducks to within five, 33-28, at intermission.

Evergreen began the second half by scoring 10 of the first 14 points to regain the lead at 38-37 with 15:56 left. Over the next 6 1/2 minutes, the Lutes regained and kept the lead until the 9:35 mark, when the Geoducks took the lead for good. Evergreen stretched the margin to 10 points with 1:25 left and cruised to the win.

The Lutes made 6 of 9 attempts from the three-point line in the first half to propel them to the first half lead. The PLU defense, meanwhile, held Evergreen to 34.5 percent from the field on 10 of 29 attempts including 4-12 from three-point range.

But in the second half, Evergreen improved to 52 percent from the field -- 13-25 -- and converted 12 of 19 free throws to claim the win.

Sudon DeSuze led the Lutes with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Kurt Oliver came off the bench to score 15 points -- all on three-pointers -- and Brian Jochim contributed 13 points, also off the bench.

Josh Peterson scored 15 points and had 8 rebounds, Giovonne Woods had 14 points and Walter Tucker finished with 10 points and 7 rebounds to pace Evergreen.

The Lutes are at Seattle Pacific on Friday for a 7:00 p.m. game. Evergreen hosts Eastern Oregon next Friday at 7:30 p.m.
