CITY TECH TOPS YORK TO GO TO 3-0 IN CUNY
BROOKLYN, NY -- City Tech senior center Shacun Malave (DeWitt Clinton / Bronx, NY) surpassed the 1,000 point barrier en route to an 86-72 victory over York College at New York City College of Technology’s Klitgord Center last night.
Malave, a 6’7” preseason All-American was held to his lowest output of the season (10 points, six rebounds) but a made free throw on the back end of a one-and-one gave the three-year Yellow Jacket standout his seventh point of the contest making him the only man in the fifty-plus year history of City Tech basketball to accomplish the grand total. City Tech, which was competing as a junior college until 1999, saw current senior Camille Manning realize that feat last season.
Moreover, Malave was held to a season-low seven shots and two blocks by a stingy post defense by York, who outrebounded the Yellow Jackets 33-31. City Tech’s veteran starting lineup accounted for 63 of the team’s 86 points, led by senior Jason Senior (Satellite Academy / Brooklyn, NY) with 18 points and ten rebounds. Junior guard Clyde Forteau (St. Raymond’s / Bronx, NY) enjoyed his best effort of 2004-05 with 16 points, including three treys, and 5-10 shooting from the floor. Backcourt mate, Nkosi Hamilton (August Martin / Queens, NY) added 12 points and a team-high four assists.
Although York received 20 points from junior guard Reyaad Mohamed (Thomas Edison / Ozone Park, NY) and 16 points from sophomore center Andre Vincent (F. D. Roosevelt/Brooklyn, NY), they were done in by a poor defensive first half, in which the Cardinals allowed Tech to score 51 points (compared to 38). The lead was actually extended to 18 points with three minutes left in the game on four consecutive points by Hamilton, before time ran out on the Cardinals, who stand at 1-5, 0-2 CUNY.
City Tech (5-2, 3-0 CUNY) now goes into the holiday break atop the CUNYAC South Division standings at 3-0, tied with the College of Staten Island. Conference play resumes on Saturday, January 8th. But the Yellow Jackets, riding a two-game win streak have three games between now and then, beginning on Saturday with a clash against Richard Stockton College (3-4) in the 2nd Annual CUNYAC / NJAC (New Jersey Athletic Conference) Basketball Challenge. This neutral site contest will be played at CCNY this Saturday, December 11 at 4:45 pm.
