Western New England 77, Elms 66

CHICOPEE, Ma. — Elms College sophomore guard John Ancrum (Harlem, NY) netted a team-high 19 points and six assists, but junior guard Jon Godbout (Bristol, CT) scored a collegiate career-high 27 points to lead Western New England College (WNEC) to a 77-66 win over the Blazers in Thursday night’s non-conference men’s basketball game at the Maguire Center.

WNEC improved to 4-3 overall and also snapped Elms College’s five-game winning streak. The Blazers fell to 5-2 overall.

The Golden Bears scored 27 of the game’s first 36 points in the opening 10 minutes of the first half to take a 27-9 lead.

The Blazers, however, responded with a 16-5 run to cut the deficit to 32-25 with 4:30 remaining in the half.

WNEC then answered with a 10-0 run in the next 90 seconds and extended its lead to 47-32 at intermission. Godbout finished with 23 first half points, including three 3-pointers to spark the Golden Bears.

Although Elms College was able to cut the deficit to 55-45 five minutes into the second half, poor shooting plagued the Blazers, as they were limited to 35.1-percent shooting from the field in the second half and shot just 30.4-percent for the game.

Junior forward Lonnie Branyon III (West Haven, CT) recorded a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds for the Blazers. Freshman forward Renato Lindmets (Springfield, MA) also reached double figures, as he finished with 13 points.

Sophomore forward Jim Bayne (Bristol, CT) had 14 points and 10 rebounds, while senior forward Anthony Charbatji (Attleboro, MA) added 11 points for the Golden Bears in the victory.

Elms College concludes first semester play when it travels to Lasell College for a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) tilt on Saturday, December 11. Game time is 3:00 p.m.
