Carroll 81, Carthage 76

— (Waukesha, Wis.) – The Carroll College men’s basketball team remained undefeated on the season with an 81-76 win over Carthage College Thursday night in Van Male Fieldhouse.

“This was a quality win against a quality program. We battled and they kept coming at us but we did what we needed to do in the end,” said head coach David Schultz. “They are an explosive team so defensively, we tried to take away some of their key players and hold them down.”

Carroll jumped out to a 35-31 halftime lead before Carthage rallied to take their final lead of the second half at 46-45 with 14:51 remaining in the game. The Pioneers led the remainder of the game and led by as many as 11 points at 63-52 with 7:55 to play.

Carroll sophomore forward Paul Toshner came off the bench to lead the Pioneers with a career-high 24 points on 9-of-13 shooting from the field. Four others reached double-figures in scoring, including junior Jason Scheper with 18, junior Jason Trimborn and senior Ben Hickethier with 12 each and junior James Johnson with 11. Hickethier also pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds while Johnson dished out a game-high five assists.

“Paul had a very good game. Sometimes teams put their best defensive player on Scheper and that opens things up for other players,” said Schultz. “He worked real hard down low and was in the right place at the right time most of the night.”

The Pioneers, 3-0 on the season, return to action Dec. 17 and 18 when they compete in the Elmhurst College Tournament. The loss drops Carthage to 3-3 on the season.
