Washington College 71, Ursinus 70

CHESTERTOWN, Md. — Junior guard Travis Moore (converted a four-point play with 2.9 seconds remaining in the second half to complete a late rally by host Washington College and give the Shoremen a 71-70 Centennial Conference men's basketball victory over visiting Ursinus College this evening at Cain Athletic Center.

The Shoremen (3-3, 1-1 Centennial) trailed by 12 points with under three minutes left in the game after Ted Piotrowicz made a lay-up to give the Bears (3-3, 1-1) a 68-56 lead at the 3:12 mark. Washington then ran off 11 straight points, beginning with a Moore lay-up with 2:49 to play and concluding with a jumper from just inside the three-point line by junior forward Jonathan Webb, to close within one at 68-67 with 48 seconds on the clock.

Mike McGarvey pushed the lead to 70-67 with a pair of free throws for Ursinus with 36 seconds to go. After two missed three-pointers by Washington, senior guard John "China" Alexander grabbed an offensive rebound with five seconds to go and found Moore on the perimeter. Moore drained the game-tying triple and was fouled by Piotrowicz. Following an Ursinus timeout, Moore went to the line and knocked down the game-winning free throw. Ursinus got off a desperation shot from three-quarters court in the final seconds, but the ball fell short and wide of the hoop.

Ursinus broke open a close first half with a 13-0 run that broke a 26-26 deadlock with 6:23 to go in the period. Nick Shattuck capped off that skein with a lay-up with 2:31 to go before the break that gave the Bears a 39-26 advantage. Ursinus led for 26 consecutive minutes before Moore hit his dramatic three-pointer.

Fourteen of Moore's team-high 17 points came in the second half, with eight of those points coming in the final 2:49 of the game. He connected on six of his 11 field goal attempts in the contest and three of his three-point attempts, putting up those numbers in just 15 minutes of playing time off the Washington bench.

Webb was the only other Shoreman to reach double figures in scoring, tallying 12 points in the victory. Sophomore forward Joe Breslin put up game- and career-high totals of 14 rebounds and three blocked shots for Washington. Breslin pulled down seven of the Shoremen's 20 offensive rebounds on the night. Junior guard Kyle Stem added a game-high four steals to go along with seven points and a team-best three assists.

McGarvey led all scorers with 22 points for the Bears and dished out a game-high seven assists. Brian McEvily added 18 points for Ursinus, while Nick Shattuck finish with 10. Matt Fabian grabbed a team-best 12 boards, including seven on the offensive end.

The Bears shot a red-hot 59% from the floor in the first half, but the Shoremen held them to 33% shooting in the second half, giving Ursinus a 46% shooting performance for the game. Washington shot 37% in the game, but committed seven fewer turnovers than the Bears (15 to 22). Ursinus held a 44-40 advantage on the boards.
